Brief Hijacking Ends Safely in Mexico

By VOA News
09 September 2009

A passenger jet from the Mexican resort town of Cancun was briefly hijacked Wednesday, but the more than 100 passengers and crew onboard were released unharmed when the plane landed in Mexico City.

Mexican television said the hijackers had demanded to speak to President Felipe Calderon and threatened to blow up the Aeromexico airliner unless they were allowed to talk to him.

After the plane landed, the passengers and crew left unharmed, and at least five men were taken away by police in handcuffs. Police said they did not find explosives onboard.

President Calderon was already at the airport, apparently on an unrelated trip. There was no indication he spoke with the hijackers.

One passenger was quoted as saying she did not know the flight had been hijacked until the plane landed in the Mexican capital.

A U.S. official says American, French and Mexican citizens were among 112 people on board the hijacked plane.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
