Indonesian Police Engaged in Shootout with Terror Suspects

By VOA News
07 August 2009

Police officials in Indonesia say officers have been engaged in a shoot-out at a house in Central Java with militants suspected to be involved with last month's hotel bombings in Jakarta.

A police spokesman, Nanan Soekarna, says a special anti-terror unit raided a house Friday in a remote Central Java village, Temanggung, and a gun battle broke out. It was unclear how many suspects were in the house. Indonesian television reports two people have been arrested in the raid.

Police say they have been hunting for suspects behind last month's bombings at two Jakarta hotels in which suicide bombers killed seven people with twin explosions.

The police spokesman says its possible one of the suspects in the house is Malaysian extremist Noordin Top. He is believed to be the mastermind behind the hotel bombings and several other terrorist attacks, along with the al-Qaida-linked group Jemaah Islamiyah.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
