Global swine flu claims 1,247 lives

15:20 03/08/2009 MOSCOW, August 3 (RIA Novosti) - The number of confirmed deaths from swine flu in the world has risen to 1,247, Russia's consumer watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said on Monday.

The watchdog said as of Sunday, the total number of confirmed human cases of swine flu had reached 184,435 worldwide.

The number of infections in Russia continues to grow. According to Chief State Health Inspector Gennady Onishchenko, as of Monday the number of confirmed cases had reached 55, compared with 35 on Thursday.

Oleg Kiselyov, director of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Influenza Institute, said last Monday that the first batch of a vaccine against the A/H1N1 virus would be ready by October 1 in Russia.

Kiselyov also said the vaccine would be given to volunteers from August 20.
