2 Spanish Officers Killed in Mallorca Blast
By VOA News
30 July 2009
Spanish authorities say an explosion near a police station on the country's Mediterranean island of Mallorca has killed at least two civil guard officers and left several other people injured.
Thursday's blast occurred in Palmanova, near the summer residence of Spain's royal family.
Spain's Civil Guard says the cause of the blast had not been determined by midday Thursday. But Spanish news reports say the explosion was caused by a bomb.
Separately, the Spanish government blamed Basque separatists Wednesday for a car bombing in northern Spain that left more than 60 people injured. The early morning bombing in the city of Burgos heavily damaged a civil guard barracks.
The Basque separatist group ETA has killed more than 825 people since the late 1960s in its push for an independent Basque state in northern Spain and southwestern France.
Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
