6 Dead, Dozens Wounded in Twin Jakarta Hotel Blasts

By VOA News
16 July 2009

Police in Indonesia say apparent bombings at two luxury hotels in Jakarta have killed at least six people and wounded at least two dozen others.

News reports say many of the victims at the Ritz-Carlton and Marriott hotels in the Indonesian capital were foreign nationals, but the identities of the victims have not been confirmed by police. The hotels are popular with Western tourists and visitors.

The two blasts occurred within minutes of each other.

News reports say the facade of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, in Jakarta's upscale Kuningan district, was heavily damaged. Debris and shattered glass littered the street outside.

Observers say the explosions occurred from inside the hotels, suggesting bombs could have been planted.

Jakarta's Marriott hotel was bombed six years ago. Twelve people died in the 2003 bombing, which was blamed on the southeast Asian terror network Jemaah Islamiyah
