EADS Defence & Security successfully tests a new disinfection system for countering epidemics
* Major test campaigns confirm effectiveness against pathogenic germs and NBC weapons
* Special vaporisation technology guarantees maximum efficiency
30 June 2009
EADS Defence & Security (DS) has developed a new type of disinfection system that offers significantly improved possibilities for countering epidemics und biological weapons. As the company announced on Tuesday, the disinfection system “TransMADDS” (Transportable Modular Aerosol-based Decontamination and Disinfection System) has demonstrated a hitherto unequalled effectiveness against pathogenic germs during two major test campaigns that were carried out, in particular, by competent agencies of the British Ministry of Defence. Moreover, the system can also be deployed to neutralise nuclear, biological and chemical weapons.
TransMADDS is used for the dispersion of liquids in the context of disinfecting surfaces and devices in closed rooms. For this, the system not only ensures the highest possible application speed, but also requires the least possible quantity of disinfectant. It can be deployed during military missions for combating nuclear, biological or chemical contamination as well as in civil emergencies, e.g. for disinfecting hospitals in the event of a “superbug”. The TransMADDS system has been jointly developed by EADS Defence & Security and the UK-based technology company Pursuit Dynamics.
“Epidemics present a considerable danger to everybody,” explains Bernd Wenzler, CEO of Defence Electronics, an integrated activity of EADS Defence & Security. “This disinfection system can make a substantial contribution to preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Therefore, our new product is an ideal example of how modern technologies can be used for increasing the safety of all of us in everyday life.”
The aerosol technology of the TransMADDS system is at the very forefront of fluid vaporisation capabilities. The minuscule size of the droplets of only approximately 1 micrometer allows the spraying agent to be transformed into a virtually gaseous state, thus ensuring optimum distribution. For example, a 12 x 7 x 3 metre room with a volume of roughly 250 cubic metres can be completely treated within a period of only 60 seconds. This ensures quick and efficient disinfection of technical facilities and infrastructures, e.g. in hospitals, schools, etc.
Defence Electronics has been active in the field of chemical and biological decontamination for many years. Moreover, the company has developed a family of mobile medical solutions ranging from first-aid rescue stations to complete field hospitals.
Defence Electronics is an integrated activity of EADS Defence & Security (DS). DS is a systems solutions provider for armed forces and civil security worldwide. Its portfolio ranges from sensors and secure networks through missiles to aircraft and UAVs as well as global security, service and support solutions. In 2008, DS – with around 23,000 employees – achieved revenues of € 5.7 billion. EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2008, EADS generated revenues of € 43.3 billion and employs a workforce of about 118,000.
