Taipei, May 21 (CNA) A third case of swine flu, officially known as influenza A(H1N1) , was confirmed in Taiwan late Thursday, according to the Central Epidemics Command Center.
The case was a 23-year-old Taiwanese student studying in the United States who returned to Taiwan early Thursday via EVA Airways flight BR17, said Shih Wen-yi, the command center's spokesman, at a late night news conference.
The female student was detected to have a fever at a quarantine station at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and a laboratory test confirmed in the evening that she was infected with the swine flu virus, Shih said.
Earlier in the day, the center just confirmed the country's second case of swine flu. The case was also a young Taiwanese woman returning from New York.
On Wednesday, the center confirmed the country's first swine flu case, which involved a 52-year-old Australian doctor who arrived in Taiwan May 18 from the United States via Hong Kong. He was taken directly from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport to a hospital in Taoyuan County for treatment in quarantine.
As all of them were imported cases, Shih said, the current phase 2 or yellow alert against the disease will remain unchanged.
