Poland confirms first case of swine flu

07/05/2009 09:21 PRAGUE, May 7 (RIA Novosti) - The first case of the A/H1N1 infection has been registered in Poland, the country's RMF FM radio station said.

The deadly virus, which has already claimed 29 lives in Mexico and one in the U.S., was confirmed in a 58-year-old woman, who had recently returned from the U.S.

"The patient is in stable condition. The woman has been placed in an infectious disease ward," the station quoted a doctor as saying.

Sweden has also reported one case of the human swine flu infection. The country's Institute for Infectious Disease Control has said in a statement that a woman in her 50s developed symptoms of the disease last Wednesday after returning to Stockholm from Chicago, but had recovered.

The World Health Organization said on Monday that the A/H1N1 virus has been officially confirmed in 1,893 people in 23 countries, including 942 in Mexico. However, the country's health secretary Jose Angel Cordova said on Wednesday that the number of confirmed cases in the country has risen to 1,112 in Mexico, including 42 deaths.

According to the WHO, a total of 642 cases have been registered in the U.S. The organization has not yet confirmed media reports about a second death from the virus in the U.S.

Outbreaks of the deadly virus have also been reported in Canada (165 cases), Spain (73), the U.K. (28) and Germany (9). New Zealand, France and Italy have each registered five cases. Four human swine flu infections have been confirmed in Israel, two in El Salvador and two in South Korea.

Each of the following countries has reported one case: Austria , Hong Kong, Costa Rica, Colombia, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal and Guatemala.
