NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet kicked off its participation in Hurricane Exercise 09, dubbed HURREX/Citadel Gale 09, May 4.

U.S. Fleet Forces Command (USFF) and Commander Navy Installations Command (CNIC) are conducting this exercise, which runs May 4-14, to prepare the Navy to respond to weather threats to U.S. coastal regions and maintain the ability to deploy forces even under the most adverse weather conditions.

During HURREX 09, 2nd Fleet will respond to two simulated weather systems which will develop and intensify to hurricane strength, threatening the Caribbean Islands, East Coast and Gulf Coast regions.

"HURREX is an annual USFF exercise that provides Second Fleet units with an opportunity to focus on conducting necessary training in preparation for the upcoming Atlantic Hurricane Season," said 2nd Fleet Oceanographer Cmdr. Steven Sopko.

"Units will train in important areas such as emergency sortie, heavy weather bills, storm evasion at sea, personnel accountability and disaster preparedness, both at work and at home.

"The lessons learned during HURREX are key to conducting safe, effective fleet operations while minimizing potential weather impacts during hurricane season."

Participants include all Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean and East Coast ashore and afloat units, in port and underway. The exercise will include states from Texas, along the Gulf Coast and up to the East Coast all the way to Maine.

The actual hurricane season for the United States begins June 1 and runs until Nov. 30. Ensuring the accountability and safety of personnel is a top priority for Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet.
