US set to free 30 Guantanamo inmates soon

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, April 29, IRNA -- The United States is set to release 30 Guantanamo inmates in the near future, US Attorney General Eric Holder announced Wednesday following his talks with German government officials in Berlin.

The administration of President Barack Obama has urged its European allies, including Germany, to take in some of 241 prisoners who are languishing in the Guantanamo facility.

Holder who met also with Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, stressed that the German government had 'not definitely' rejected the American request.

There had been no concrete talks about the number of inmates who could be relocated to Germany, said Holder, adding it was too premature to hold such discussions.

The German government said earlier it was considering plans to take in a number of foreign detainees held without legal charges by American authorities in the Guantanamo prison camp for more than six years.

Holder has been visiting European capitals, among them London and Prague, this week seeking help transferring detainees and closing the controversial detention site over the next nine months.

Some European countries, including Portugal and Lithuania, have announced they will contemplate taking such inmates.

Albania is reportedly the only nation yet to take in former Guantanamo detainees who were not its nationals or legal residents.
