Pakistan takes precautionary measures to check Swine Flu virus

Islamabad, April 29, IRNA -- Pakistan has taken precautionary measures at all entry points including airports and sea-ports of the country to check the swine flu virus for the protection of the health of the population, health officials said Wednesday.

Over 200 passengers, who arrived from Toronto in the eastern city of Lahore, were screened at the airport, they said.

No case has been reported in any part of the country, Director General Health Abdur Rasheed Juma said at a news conference in Islamabad.

He said that all airports have been asked to screen passengers entering Pakistan, adding that crew of all arriving aircraft are being instructed to be vigilant and observe passengers for signs of flu-like symptoms and report to the airport health authorities as soon as the plane lands.

Juma said that besides all sea-ports and land entry points are being provided guidelines to screen individuals entering Pakistan with flu-like symptoms.

"The Health Ministry is cognizant of the risk posed to human health as a result of reported cases and fatalities associated with Swine flu in Mexico, US, Canada and parts of Europe."

He directed heads of all educational institutions in federal and provincial capitals to inform the parents that their children with flu-like symptoms may not be sent to school.

The director general also advised the public to observe precautionary measures that included always covering mouth, frequent washing of nose and hands especially after sneezing and coughing, before eating food and after using toilet.

He said people with flu-like symptoms must avoid physical contact with others, avoid visiting public places and consult a doctor.
