Germany confirms first case of swine flu

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, April 29, IRNA - German health officials in the southern state of Bavaria on Wednesday confirmed the country's first human swine flu case, media reports said.

A lab test conducted by the Berlin-based Robert-Koch-Institute confirmed that an unidentified patient living near the city of Regensburg had contracted the potentially deadly swine flu virus, said the Bavarian Health Ministry.

There are at least three more suspected cases of swine flu in Germany, according to news reports.

There have been contingency plans by the German government in case of the swine flu outbreak as thousands of anti-viral drugs have already been stockpiled.

Authorities have also stepped up the screening of German airports and ports for passengers coming from the US and Mexico where the swine flu virus originated.
