April 22, 2009
DUSHANBE -- Tajik authorities have detained eight members of the banned Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) since January 1, RFE/RL's Tajik Service reports.
Tajik Interior Minister Abdurahim Qahhorov said in Dushanbe that all suspected IMU members are from the country's northern Isfara district.
He added that 124 members of the unregistered Jamaat-ut Tabligh Islamic movement have also been apprehended, four of whom were found guilty of criminal activities and sentenced to jail, while the others were released.
Meanwhile, the chief of the Interior Affairs Department in the northern city of Khujand, General Rauf Yusufov, told RFE/RL that a local police officer was shot and injured on April 16.
He added that the police know who shot the officer but did not say if he is a member of an extremist group.
