PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti (NNS) -- The communications team aboard hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) made its way ashore to Haiti, the first stop in Continuing Promise 2009.
The Comfort is on a four-month humanitarian and civic assistance mission to seven countries in Latin America and the Caribbean in support of CP 09. CP 09 combines U.S. military and interagency personnel, non-governmental organizations and academia and partner nations to provide medical, dental, veterinary and engineering services afloat and ashore alongside host nation personnel.
The communication team's mission is to set up high-speed communication systems from ship to shore. The system will provide real-time chat using satellite and laptops.
"If a patient has some type of abnormality we'll chat with a physician on board to find out whether or not he or she can be treated," said Navy Electronics Technician 2nd Class James Amos. "This helps eliminate the transferring of patients that can't be treated by the doctors."
The team will also be able to transfer photos through the system. This will help clear up any confusion the doctors may have and give them a visual representation of the patient's condition.
"I feel honored rendering our American services. We're helping people out that are less fortunate and hopefully we'll be able to provide them with something that will help them for a lifetime," said Army Staff Sgt. Fernando Cuba, systems team chief. "This is an excellent opportunity to show the world we're here to help."
