NEW ORLEANS (NNS) -- Naval Air Station, Joint Reserve Base (NAS JRB), New Orleans' chain of command met with representatives from Chevron Oronite's Oak Point, La., additive processing plant April 6 to discuss emergency preparedness and disaster readiness.

Located in Belle Chasse, less than a mile from NAS JRB, Chevron Oronite Company's Oak Point Plant produces of blended fuel and lubricant additives. The plant produces more than 62 million gallons of products.

"We are excited to have such brave men and women living and serving right in our community," said Gene Propst, a Chevron spokesman. "We have always had a good relationship with the military since our early beginnings, and the military's presence in our area has always been strong. We owe a great deal to the Navy."

The Oak Point facility was founded shortly after the bombing at Pearl Harbor to produce oils and lubricants for U.S. Navy submarines.

Capt. Bill Snyder, NAS JRB New Orleans commanding officer, said the meeting was needed in order to respond to any threat posed by an accident at the plant.

"Our teamwork in combating a real-world emergency could help save lives," said Snyder. "We have thousands of people who live and work on our base. Our response could mean the difference between life and death. The first responders for both of our organizations can synchronize efforts to combat any accidental discharge, release or spill."

"Keeping a harmonious relationship between the base and Chevron is important," said Snyder. "We've been partners for a long time."
