NORFOLK (NNS) -- Guided missile destroyer USS Truxtun (DDG 103) homeported in Norfolk, Va., rendered aid to distressed mariners March 22, responding to direction from Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet to render assistance to a sailing vessel in the Gulf of Mexico.
The 45-foot sailing vessel Calypso Queen reported a broken mast and sail, as well as electrical and mechanical casualties. Coordination between the Coast Guard and 2nd Fleet resulted in Truxtun's identification as the closest available asset to render aid.
The crew, a man and a woman, were transferred to Truxtun via one of the ship's rigid hull inflatable boats, and required no medical assistance. The Calypso Queen was taken under tow by Truxtun and will be turned over to the Coast Guard.
Second Fleet is working with U.S. Coast Guard District 7 to ensure the civilian mariners' safe return to Tampa, Fl.
