Al-Qaida Suspects Face Trial in Yemen

By VOA News
11 March 2009

Sixteen suspected members of an al-Qaida terrorist cell have gone on trial in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.

The accused were charged Wednesday in a series of attacks against foreign targets, including a failed attempt to strike the U.S. embassy in March of 2008 and the killing of two Belgian tourists, also last year.

Four Syrians and a Saudi are among the accused.

Yemen is an ally of the United States but an anti-foreign underground network has developed in the country. More than a third of the remaining suspects held in the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba are Yemeni nationals.
