Two-year-old girl contracts bird flu in Egypt
26/01/2009 12:02 CAIRO, January 26 (RIA Novosti) - A two-year-old girl has been infected with bird flu in Egypt, making it the 53rd case of the deadly H5N1 virus since it was first reported in the country in 2006, a health ministry official said.
Shurouq Said from the province of Menoufiya in the Nile estuary is being treated with special anti-flu drugs, her condition is now stable, Abdel Rahman Shahine said on Sunday. The girl is reported to have been in contact with domestic poultry.
Twenty-three people have died in Egypt of avian influenza, which scientists fear may mutate into a form that could be transmitted from person to person causing a global pandemic.
During an international bird flu conference at Egypt's resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh last year, the country's health minister said Egypt would need some $2.2 billion to deal with the virus over the next three years.
