Afghanistan Extradites Alleged IMU Leader To Tajikistan
January 16, 2009
KUDJANT, Tajikistan -- Afghanistan has extradited Anvar Kayumov, one of the leaders of the banned Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), to Tajikistan.
Abdurahim Kahhorov, the chief of police in the northern Tajik province of Suhd, told RFE/RL's Tajik Service that Kayumov faces terrorism charges.
Kahhorov says four other supporters of Kayumov were arrested in the province this week.
Kayumov is believed to have been with the IMU since 1997. He later moved to Afghanistan with other IMU fighters.
The IMU is listed by many countries as a terrorist organization.
