PACA maritime cluster: Thales protects ports from seaward threats

29 October 2008

The project is born by the General Directorate for Enterprises (DGE) in France and promoted by the PACA maritime cluster in the south of France.

As part of its Maritime Safety & Security activities, Thales leads this SECMAR project which also involves numerous other partners in the PACA region (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur) to develop an innovative multi-sensor system to protect the integrity of a civil or military harbour or economically vital plants.

Leveraging on its know-how in maritime traffic management, port protection and system integration covering the air, surface and underwater components and drawing on its promising experiments in 2007, Thales and partners* develop a system made of various sub-systems such as radar, sonar and electro-optics. They will be deployed on the recently named Grand Port Maritime de Marseille, associated to the project at its earliest phase.

This new step marks the development launch of an operational integrated port protection system tested by the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille, major European harbour in terms of goods traffic.

"SECMAR allows a great number of actors in the maritime site protection domain to participate and contribute to the establishment of solutions that can be adapted to numerous other sensitive maritime sites" underlines Michel Agostini, Director Maritime Safety & Security activities within Thales's Naval division.
