A German cargo ship is believed to have been hijacked by pirates off the Somali coast, a foreign ministry spokesperson said here Friday.
Andreas Peschke confirmed to journalists that a German-owned freighter went missing in Somali waters on Thursday.
He added that the cargo ship was not sailing under the German flag but was registered in the Caribbean country of Antigua and Barbuda.
Peschke who did not divulge the name of the German shipping company, said there had been no German nationals on board the freighter.
Somali pirates have also reportedly seized a Japanese tanker and an Iranian cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden just two days after a Malaysian ship was hijacked.
Piracy off Somalia's lawless coast has surged in the recent three months.
Before the latest round of hijackings, at least eight other vessels had been attacked in the maritime region over the past months.
