Chechen President Kadyrov denies assassination attempt rumors
30/07/2008 20:48 GROZNY, July 30 (RIA Novosti) - Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov has denied rumors about an assassination attempt on him, calling them "provocations" aimed at destabilizing the situation in the Russian North Caucasus republic.
"The rumors originate from Wahhabis or provocateurs seeking cheap sensations," Kadyrov said. "The situation in the Chechen Republic now is very quiet and stable, but of course there are people very much discontented with it. Such verbiage is only aimed at destabilizing the situation in the region."
The Chechen leader vowed to eradicate Wahhabism - a radical movement in Islam in Chechnya. "If Wahhabism cannot be cured, it can only be eradicated, which is what we will do," he told journalists.
Kadyrov also said Chechen militant leader Doku Umarov would face the same fate as Shamil Basayev, Chechnya's number one terrorist who was killed in July 2006.
Chechnya saw two Kremlin-led military campaigns in the 1990s and early 2000s against separatist forces. Although the active phase of the operation has been completed, frequent attacks by militants still occur in Chechnya and neighboring republics.
