Britain Convicts Terrorist Leader, 3 Followers

By VOA News
26 February 2008

Britain has convicted four men of organizing or attending terrorism training camps, including a leader who called himself "Osama bin London."

A high security court in London Tuesday convicted 50-year-old Mohammed Hamid and three of his followers Kibley da Costa, Mohammed Al-Figari, and Kader Ahmed. It acquitted one suspect Mousa Brown. Sentencing is set for a later date.

Police said Hamid had organized terrorist training camps in Britain, where trainees used sticks in place of rifles and practiced beheadings on watermelons. Authorities said Hamid planned to send his recruits for more training in Afghanistan and east Africa. He was arrested after an undercover agent infiltrated his followers.

Security forces arrested the men in 2006 as they met for dinner in London.

Police said some of Hamid's followers were involved in failed bomb attacks on London's public transport system on July 21, 2005.

Those attempts came two weeks after suicide bombers killed 52 people in attacks on the London transit system.
