Saudi Arabia Arrests 28 Al-Qaida Suspects for Attack Plot

By VOA News
23 December 2007

Saudi state media say security forces have arrested 28 al-Qaida-linked militants suspected of plotting attacks inside Saudi Arabia.

The official (SPA) news agency, quoting an official at the Interior Ministry, said Sunday that the arrests began in mid-December. The official said 27 of the suspects are Saudi nationals and one is a foreign resident.

It was not immediately clear if the arrests were related to an alleged al-Qaida plan to stage attacks during the annual hajj pilgrimage.

On Friday, Saudi authorities said they had arrested several members of an al-Qaida-linked group suspected of planning terrorist attacks during the hajj. The piligrimage ended Friday.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
