EADS Defence & Security has been awarded by the French Ministry of the Interior a contract for deployment of ANTARES infrastructure

  • Radiocommunications service to be set up for the benefit of the public services contributing to homeland security missions - total interoperability at national and interdepartmental levels
  • Decisive step towards a national shared transmissions infrastructure
  • Long-term commitment proves enduring quality of TETRAPOL technology

Elancourt/Unterschleißheim, 14 December 2007

EADS Defence & Security (DS) has just been notified by the French Ministry of the Interior that it has been awarded the contract to expand the ACROPOL radiocommunications network named ANTARES 1 for the benefit of the public services contributing to homeland security missions.

This deployment project answers the expectations of numerous fire and emergency services of French departments (SDIS 2 ) to be equipped as soon as possible with this new radiocommunications service, which is based on the common resources of the national shared transmission infrastructure (INPT 3 ) and has demonstrated its efficiency in an initial trial phase conducted in 2005 in the Ain and Eure-et-Loir departments. ANTARES will be based both on the infrastructure used for the French national police force’s ACROPOL project, which has now been open for the whole of mainland France since the beginning of 2007, and on additional infrastructure. It will involve installing, adapting or increasing the network’s traffic capacity over 360 sites by 2010, to form a shared network that is totally interoperable nationwide and between French departments, based on TETRAPOL technology. When the deployment is completed, ANTARES will have more than 220,000 users, 1,300 sites and more than 70,000 radio terminals in service.

ANTARES, which is to be implemented by EADS Secure Networks, an integrated Line of Business of EADS DS, will increase the efficiency and safety of the fire services thanks to modified functionalities such as the geolocalisation of units, handling of emergency calls or transmission of data. In addition, EADS Secure Networks has developed numerous equipments such as a new range of mobile terminals and also a vehicle repeater to ensure the continuity of the communications chain.

All of these solutions are being installed in a coordinated and homogenous manner throughout the ANTARES network and are being accompanied by a standardisation initiative at national level. The ANTARES project ideally fits in with the Ministry of the Interior's expectation to enable all the forces jointly involved in public safety and homeland security tasks in France to share the same secure means of communication in the long term.

"The signing of this contract proves that the TETRAPOL technology developed by EADS Defence & Security over recent years provides a solid and indisputable base to assist the state in its desire to increase the shared use of its secure radiocommunications infrastructures," declares Hervé Guillou, CEO of Defence and Communications Systems.
