Prime Minister Gordon Brown Wednesday announced plans to widely extend security precautions to protect Britain's railway stations, shopping centres and sporting venues as well as airports against terrorist attacks.

Plans include bringing in physical barriers, vehicle exclusion zones and blast-resistant buildings to improve security at 250 railway stations, airport terminals, ports and more than 100 "sensitive installations."

Passengers travelling by train will also face having their baggage screened at major railway stations, while new security guidance is to be sent to venues where large number of people congregated, such as cinemas, restaurants, shopping centres, schools and places of worship.

Despite the extensive precautions, Brown insisted that there had been no "major failures" identified in a security review carried out by Home Office Minister, Lord West, a previous head of Britain's Royal Navy and Chief of Defence Intelligence.

The review was carried out following failed car bombing attacks in entral London and at the main passenger terminal at Glasgow Airport in Scotland at the end of June.

Some 160 counter-terrorism advisers are to train civilian staff to identify suspect activity and ensure premises have adequate emergency facilities and make best use of their CCTV footage, the British prime minister told parliament.

Brown also set out measures to counter the influence of so-called extremists in Britain's schools, universities, mosques, youth clubs and prisons, whole announcing a relaxation in restrictions on hand baggage taken onto aeroplanes at UK airports.

The events of June showed that Britain needed not just military and security counter-terrorism measures, but also efforts to win the hearts and minds of the Muslim community and ensure young people do not fall under the influence of extremists, he said.
