Terrorists plan attacks on hydro facilities in S. Russia - FSB
07/11/2006 13:19 MOSCOW, November 7 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's antiterrorist committee said Tuesday that terrorists are planning attacks on the hydropower infrastructure in southern Russia.
The fifth meeting of the antiterrorist committee focused on issues of security on Russia's inland waterways and navigable water reservoirs.
Nikolai Patrushev, head of the Federal Security Service (FSB), said: "The antiterrorist committee has information about terrorist leaders planning to launch attacks on hydropower facilities in the Ryazan and Saratov regions, and in Daghestan."
"The threat is real," said Patrushev, who also heads the committee.
He said the region is one of the largest strategically important industrial and agricultural centers in Russia, with about 670 facilities vulnerable to terrorist attacks.
However, recent inspections revealed inadequate security at a majority of hydropower and water storage facilities, making them easy targets for terrorist attacks that could lead to catastrophic consequences and paralyze the entire region, the FSB director said.
Patrushev ordered local anti-terrorist committees to take urgent measures to protect the facilities.
