The German Defense Ministry on Wednesday rejected a report in the weekly Stern news magazine which alleged that former Guantanamo detainee Murat Kurnaz was tortured by German elite anti-terror forces at a US jail in the Afghan city of Kandahar.

"I am not aware that a German-speaking prisoner of the US military was abused by German soldiers," Defense Ministry spokesman Thomas Raabe told the press in Berlin.

He pointed out that a probe of the case had been launched.

Turkish national Kurnaz who is a legal resident in Germany, was quoted as saying that Afghanistan-based German KSK forces had tortured him in the presence of US soldiers.

Kurnaz who was initially arrested in Afghanistan, was held at the US military prison camp in Guantanamo Bay for over four years.
