India hopes success of Joint mechanism with Pak on tackling terrorism

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

New Delhi, Sept 22, IRNA
India-Pak-Joint Mechanism
The joint mechanism with Pakistan on tackling terrorism must be given a try and will succeed, said Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here today.

Singh conveyed this to top Left leaders whom he met over lunch to brief them on his visit to Brazil and Cuba recently.

The Prime Minister told them that the joint mechanism with Pakistan has been generally welcomed except by main opposition Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). He noted that in both the countries there has been criticism from the fringe that there has been a "sell" out of the country" by the governments, said the Left sources.

"We will see how it works. Everything must be tried. I hope it will succeed", the sources quoted him as having told them.

The Left parties, which had welcomed the Havana initiative between the Prime Minister and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, had urged Singh before the visit that the dialogue process with Pakistan must be resumed.

The Prime Minister briefed the Left leaders on the bilateral discussions held with Brazilian President Lula Da Salva and the agreements reached with that country in various sectors.

They were also told about the summit of India-Brazil-South Africa for economic cooperation between the three big countries of three continents and the huge gains the grouping can bring about to the countries.

Singh expressed happiness over the successful conclusion of the Non Aligned Summit in Havana in which he said there were no differences and opposition.

CPI (M) General Secretary Prakash Karat and his colleague Sitaram Yechury and CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan and his colleague D Raja attended the lunch. National Security Adviser M K Narayanan and Minister of State in the PMO Prithviraj Chavan and Principal Secretary T K A Nair also attended the lunch.
