Court Sentences Indonesian Militant to Eight Years for 2005 Bali Bombings

05 September 2006

An Indonesian court has sentenced a man to eight years in prison in connection with suicide bomb attacks on Bali island in 2005.

The court in Bali's capital, Denpasar, found Abdul Aziz guilty of harboring the alleged mastermind of the attacks, Noordin Top, who is still at large.

Suicide bombers blew themselves up in three Bali restaurants on October first last year, killing 20 people and wounding about 150 others.

Aziz also was convicted Tuesday of setting up a Web site calling on Muslims to attack Westerners. The 30-year-old is a former high school computer teacher from Central Java province.

The presiding judge, Gede Wirya, said Aziz took part in a crime against humanity, and said his terrorist activities further damaged Bali's tourism industry.

Three other defendants on trial for the 2005 Bali bombings are expected to hear their verdicts this month.
