11 Suspects in Airline Terror Plot Appear in Court
22 August 2006
A total of 11 suspects arrested in Britain on charges of involvement in a plot to blow up U.S.-bound airliners over the Atlantic are being arraigned in a London courtroom under heavy security.
They were among more than 20 suspects picked up in a security sweep August 10.
Eight were formally charged Monday with conspiracy to commit murder and acts of terrorism. Three others face lesser charges for their alleged roles in a plot to bomb as many as 10 planes. All are residents of Britain and under 30 years old.
Police also are holding 11 other suspects who have not yet been charged.
Authorities say they have seized bomb-making materials, suicide notes and martyrdom videos in the probe. Other evidence is said to include fingerprints and DNA, and data from 400 computers and 200 cell phones.
Public disclosure of the alleged plot triggered a global security alert earlier this month. Widespread airport delays spawned by luggage searches began subsiding late last week.
