US Agents Make 'Terrorist-Related' Arrests in Miami

23 June 2006

U.S. prosecutors in Miami say the FBI and other law enforcement agencies have made seven arrests in a terrorist-related probe.

The U.S. Attorneys Office for the Southern District of Florida said in a statement Thursday that the FBI, in conjunction with other federal, state and local authorities, carried out the arrests in Miami's poor district of Liberty City as part of an ongoing investigation into a terrorist-related matter.

The statement also said the individuals arrested posed no immediate threat to the community.

CNN reports that authorities did not find any bomb-making materials or weapons, but did seize documents.

There are also reports that the arrests were in connection with the early stages of a plot to target Chicago's Sears Tower and other buildings in the U.S.

News conferences are scheduled for Friday both in Miami and Washington.
