Canadian Police Arrest 17 Suspected Terrorists

03 June 2006

Canadian authorities say they have arrested and charged 12 men and five youths who allegedly were planning terror attacks in and around Toronto, Ontario, Canada's most populous city.

Assistant Commissioner Mike McDonnell, a senior official of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, told reporters Saturday the suspects are all Canadian residents and had acquired three tons of highly volatile ammonium nitrate fertilizer for bombs.

He said the arrests prevented the group from assembling bombs similar to that used in the 1995 destruction of a U.S. federal building in Oklahoma City.

Officials say the suspects in Canada were inspired by Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaida terror group.

Police made the arrests Friday after an investigation involving 400 officers. The Toronto Star reports that police targeted as many as 12 locations to capture members of a homegrown terrorist cell.

Various reports say the group had videotaped Toronto's subway system.

Canadian officials say the investigation is ongoing.
