BAE Systems launch Deployable Surveillance Unit (DSU)

15 May 2006

BAE Systems focus on Homeland Security at Milipol is Border and Perimeter Protection and Coastal Surveillance. BAE Systems has developed a number of systems to maintain and enhance the security and integrity of national boundaries.

BAE Systems is launching at Milipol 2006 its highly mobile Deployable Surveillance Unit (DSU) which enhances its capability within the Homeland Security arena. The DSU is on display in the UK Pavilion on Stand E33 with BAE Systems Homeland Security Spider Command and Control System.

The DSU has been designed to fulfil the need for mobile and flexible surveillance to supplement traditional fixed security installations. The DSU combines state of the art radar, electrical optical (E-O) and infra-red (IR) cameras, motion sensors with a flexible command and control system (Spider). The DSU provides an all weather day and night capability to monitor for suspicious activities. At the core of the DSU is a highly flexible command and control (Spider) system which integrates a wide range of sensors for specific roles and requirements. It can operate independently or networked with other DSU’s and fixed installations. In networked configurations the situational awareness picture is automatically relayed to other units or the command headquarters via a fully integrated communication system including VSAT, UHF and VHF.

The DSU being displayed at Milipol has been configured for land border protection; other configurations are available to meet surveillance requirements in coastal and harbour security.

To highlight this flexibility, BAE Systems successfully trialled a DSU configured with the Spider software at the biennial NATO harbour protection event at La Spezia, Italy. This configuration included sensors that were suitable for harbour surveillance above and below water including cameras, radar and the swimmer detection sonar Cerberus from QinetiQ.
