Relatives of September 11 Victims Continue Testimony in Moussaoui Trial

11 April 2006

Relatives of victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks continue their testimony in the death penalty trial of convicted conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui.

One 48-year-old widow told the jury in Alexandria, Virginia, Tuesday that her children have not been the same since their father died in the attacks.

The jury also heard from a retired police officer, Juan Rivero who was thrown a half-block when the second World Trade Center tower collapsed. He suffered injuries that forced him to retire after 13 years on the job.

Jurors already have declared Moussaoui eligible for the death penalty for his ties to the September 11 attacks. They will decide whether he should be executed or sentenced to life in prison.

Defense lawyers say Moussaoui should be spared the death penalty. They say he had a limited role in the attacks and that being executed would fulfill his dream of becoming a martyr.
