European aviation authorities have threatened Israel's national airliner El Al with a landing ban for installing an anti-missile system on all its passenger aircraft, the online site of er Spiegel news magazine reported Friday.

Several European countries, among them Switzerland, do not allow passenger planes to carry such an anti-missile system which automatically releases diversionary flares if a heat-seeking missile is detected by on-board sensors.

"If the Israelis are caught with such a system, they risk being grounded," a spokesman for the Swiss Aviation Authority was quoted as saying.

El Al started to equip all its planes with anti-missile system called 'Flight guard' after an Israeli charter jet came under a missile attack just after takeoff in Mombassa, Kenya in November 2002.
