Three More People Test Positive for Bird Flu in Turkey
08 January 2006
Turkish authorities say three more people have tested positive for bird flu after being hospitalized in Ankara.
But the city's governor, Kemal Onal, did not say if the two children and one adult tested positive for the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus.
He announced the new cases shortly after the World Health Organization said Turkey had confirmed two new human cases of the H5N1 strain of the virus in Van province. Two teenagers, a brother and sister, died of H5N1 in the province last week.
WHO officials say all evidence suggests the patients acquired the virus through close contact with diseased poultry. The European Union has confirmed an outbreak of the deadly bird flu virus in poultry in eastern Turkey.
