Basque Separatists Reject Cease-fire
06 December 2005
Spanish authorities have evacuated the airport in the northern city of Santander after receiving a bomb threat believed to be from the Basque separatist group ETA.
The Basque newspaper Gara received an anonymous phone call saying the bomb would explode Tuesday between noon and two p.m. local time (1100 and 1300 GMT). Police were searching the airport.
Local news reports earlier in the day said ETA would not call a cease-fire until Spain and France declare a truce and deactivate their armed forces in Basque areas.
ETA has carried out numerous acts of violence during nearly four decades in its campaign for an independent Basque state, but has not killed anyone since May 2003.
