US Closes Manila Embassy to Public After Security Threat

06 December 2005

Philippine officials say a bomb squad, including sniffer dogs, searched the embassy in Manila Tuesday, but nothing unusual was found. It is not known when the embassy will reopen.

The embassy did not specify the nature of the threat, but Philippine authorities say it was made by telephone.

A statement posted on the embassy's web page Tuesday said that only emergency services for American citizens would be available. All other public operations would be suspended until it is deemed appropriate to resume.

The statement also reiterated a travel warning urging Americans to remain aware of the continued potential for terrorist attacks against Americans or other western interests in the Philippines.
