September 11 Panel Says US Not Well-Prepared for Terrorist Attack

05 December 2005

The independent commission that investigated the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against the United States is releasing its final assessments this hour on the government's efforts to prevent future attacks.

Top members of the former panel said Sunday the bipartisan group is giving the Bush administration and Congress poor marks for their response to suggestions the commission made in its report last year.

Among the major shortcomings cited by the commission was the failure to pass measures setting aside radio airwaves to allow police officers, firefighters and other first responders to communicate with each other during an emergency.

The Bush administration says America is safer than it was four years ago because of better integrated intelligence efforts.
