British Police Arrest Man at Manchester Airport Under Anti-Terrorism Laws
23 September 2005
British police have arrested a man under anti-terrorism laws at Manchester airport after he was seen acting suspiciously in the area where aircraft are parked.
A bomb disposal unit carried out a controlled explosion on a suspicious package the man was carrying. Police detained the suspect after a brief struggle. Authorities closed parts of the airport while officers investigated the incident.
Meanwhile, a court in London ordered Ethiopian-born Hussain Osman, also known as Hamdi Issac, held in custody until December 8, in connection with the failed series of bombing on London's transit system July 21. He was extradited from Italy Thursday.
In another terrorism case, a London court convicted Muslim convert Andrew Row on two counts of possessing items of use to terrorists. He was arrested near the Channel Tunnel in 2003 with a code book for terrorism and notes on details for making mortars.
