NEW ORLEANS (NNS) -- U.S. Coast Guard Vice Adm. Thad W. Allen, principal federal official (PFO) for federal response to Hurricane Katrina, addressed the crew of USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) Sept. 15 during an all-hands call in the ship’s hangar bay.

“You have been the lifeline to the first responders following the hurricane,” Allen told the crew of the multipurpose amphibious assault ship. “Your support has been absolutely extraordinary; we couldn’t have done this without you.”

Allen went on to explain the multi-service military response following the devastation in the wake of Hurricane Katrina’s landfall and subsequent flooding in New Orleans. “You are at the cutting edge of how operations will be conducted in the future,” he said.

Allen then held a brief question-and-answer session with the assembled crew before departing LHD 7.

Iwo departed Norfolk Aug. 31 to join relief and recovery efforts in the Gulf of Mexico following the impact of Hurricane Katrina.
