New Orleans Police to Perform Forcible Evacuations
09 September 2005
Police in New Orleans have been stepping up pressure on remaining residents to leave voluntarily before they are forced out of the flooded city.
A mandatory evacuation order has been issued, although the police chief, Eddie Compass, says forced evacuation will only be a last resort, and will be carried out with minimal force. He says the first priority is to help those still waiting for rescue.
Thousands of other residents have failed to obey the mandatory evacuation order for various reasons, including refusal to leave their pets.
