WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Dozens of Navy Reserve Component (RC) officer and enlisted personnel have volunteered since the end of August for active duty to provide needed help as Navy installations, regions and Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNI) respond to the impact of Hurricane Katrina.

More than 50 RC personnel have reported to Naval Air Station Meridian, Miss., to provide assistance in medical, force protection, air operations, chaplain and other support areas.

Fifteen force protection personnel also have reported to Navy Construction Battalion Center Gulfport and Naval Station Pascagoula, Miss. In addition, 18 RC officers and enlisted personnel from many designators and ratings have volunteered to serve at emergency operations centers at Navy Region South in Corpus Christi, Texas; at Navy Region Gulf Coast, in Pensacola, Fla.; and at CNI headquarters in Washington, D.C.

All have volunteered for active duty and are serving under a variety of orders, some for their annual two-week active duty period and others under longer-term orders.

Assessment of the needs for other RC specialists continues, and others may also have the opportunity to volunteer to serve as the recovery operations continue.
