EU-Muslim World-Terrorism
European Union Commissioner for Justice and Security, Franco Frattini, called Wednesday for an open dialogue with the Muslim world to fight terrorism.
"We must uncover the root causes of violent radicalization and recruitment to the armies of terror. We need an open dialogue with religious communities, and of course with the Arab and Muslim worlds, to find a common ground of values, a genuinely universal sense of citizenship to which we are all called to belong,'' Frattini told the European Parliament in Strasbourg during a debate on terrorism.
He said the Commission, the EU's executive, will address the issue of international cooperation in the fight against terrorism in a report to be adopted on 21 September.
On his part, Charles Clarke, UK Home Secretary, called for practical EU support for intelligence-led operations and cross-border rosecutions to deal with terrorism, organized crime and illegal immigration.
The current British EU Presidency is proposing the retention of telecommunications data, establishing a second generation of the Schengen Information System and putting in place a new Visa Information System.
"That is why we argue that internationally consistent and coherent biometric data should be an automatic part of our visas, passports and identity cards where we have them,'' he said.
