United States Condemns Terrorist Bombings in Egyptian Resort

Secretary Rice pledges U.S. will stand with Egypt to "defeat this scourge"

The United States is condemning "in the strongest possible terms" the terrorist bombings in the Egyptian Red Sea Resort of Sharm el Sheikh July 23 reported to have killed at least 88 people.

A White House statement issued the same day said that President Bush spoke with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and "offered his personal condolences and the support of the American people."  The statement added that "The United States stands ready to assist the Government of Egypt in helping the victims and bringing the perpetrators of these acts to justice."

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also issued a statement condemning the bombing and declaring that the United States is pledged to stand with Egypt to “defeat this scourge that knows no boundary and respects no creed.”

Statement by the Press Secretary

The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms the barbaric terrorist attacks in Sharm el Sheikh Egypt that killed and injured scores of innocent civilians from many nations and religious faiths. We offer our prayers for the victims and their families and join the international community in deeply deploring this assault on the civilized world.

The President spoke with President Mubarak this morning and offered his personal condolences and the support of the American people. The United States stands firmly with the people of Egypt at this time of national mourning. The United States stands ready to assist the Government of Egypt in helping the victims and bringing the perpetrators of these acts to justice. Standing together with the rest of the civilized world, we will win the conflict against this global scourge.

Statement by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice

Sharm el Sheikh Bombings

I condemn the horrific terrorist bombings in Sharm el Sheikh. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and innocent victims from many nations who suffered in this senseless attack.

I have spoken with Foreign Minister Aboul Gheit. At this difficult time of testing, the United States stands with our friend and ally Egypt. Together we will confront and defeat this  scourge that knows no boundary and respects no creed.
