RIA Novosti

DUSHANBE, February 1 (RIA Novosti) - Two active members of outlawed religious extremist party Hizb ut-Tahrir have been arrested in the Sogdiisk region in the north of Tajikistan.

According to a RIA Novosti source in the country's law enforcement agencies, regional organized crime department officers arrested a 40-year-old local named Mansur Takhirov. He is said to have operated as a recruiter for Hizb ut-Tahrir, called for toppling the regime and promoted interethnic strife.

Police in the regional administrative capital of Hudzhand have caught a 24-year-old local resident of Yunus Abdukhakimov in act of spreading Hizb ut-Tahrir leaflets. His search produced 180 antigovernment leaflets. Another 100 similar leaflets were found in his car.

The major trials of extremists have taken place in the Sogdiisk and Khatlonsk regions of Tajikistan in 2004, sentencing over 40 Hizb ut-Tahrir leaders and rank-and-file members to various terms in prison. The Supreme Court of Tajikistan outlawed the party in April 2004.
