REMARKS AT THE RIZHSKAYA METRO STATION IN MOSCOW

Richard L. Armitage, Deputy Secretary of State

DEPUTY SECRETARY ARMITAGE: Good Evening. I've come here this evening to pause and remember the victims of the terrible bombing here at the Rizhskaya Metro. We remember those citizens who lost their lives here, and in other recent tragedies - the tragic terrorist bombings in Russia. The whole civilized world witnessed the tragic events in Beslan, and was horrified by it, and share the sorrow of the Russian people. Citizens of my nation, the United States, cry with the people of the Russian Federation, and we mourn with you. Tonight and tomorrow I'll be meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister Kislyak to discuss our common efforts to rid the world of the scourge of terrorism. The United States will stand side-by-side with Russia, and the citizens of the United States stand side-by-side with Russian citizens until we end this scourge. I thank you very much, good evening.

AP REPORTER: Can I ask you a question?

DEPUTY SECRETARY ARMITAGE: Sure.

AP REPORTER: Associated Press. Which initiatives specifically are you going to discuss?

DEPUTY SECRETARY ARMITAGE: That's what I'm going to discuss with my counterpart, Deputy Foreign Minister Kislyak. I don't think those are things we want to necessarily talk publicly about.

AP REPORTER: Do you think Russia is doing enough to stop terrorism?

DEPUTY SECRETARY ARMITAGE: I think Russia is working very hard in the Global War on Terrorism, has been a good partner for us since 9/11, and I have no doubt that that partnership will continue. Thank you all very much. [End]
