NATO to assist in security operations of Athens Olympics

BRUSSELS, Feb. 26 (Xinhuanet) -- The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will stand ready to assist in the security operations for the upcoming Athens Olympics, said a press release issued Wednesday by the NATO Headquarters.
NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer made the similar pledge during his recent visit to Athens, Greece.
"NATO can assist, NATO will assist, NATO is in a position to assist," the Secretary General was quoted by the press release.
According to the NATO Headquarters, NATO's contribution includes deploying AWACS radar surveillance planes and assisting in developing contingency plans for the consequences of a terrorist attack or natural disaster.
