Regional conference on counter-terrorism opens in Bali

BALI, Indonesia, Feb. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- A regional ministerial conference on counter-terorrism opened Wednesday on Indonesia's resort island of Bali, where terrorist attacks on two nightclubs killed 202 people from 22 countries and regions on Oct. 12, 2002.
Co-hosted by Indonesia and Australia, 29 ministers or high-ranking officials dealing with foreign affairs or law enforcement from Asia-Pacific countries participated in the conference.
Among the prominent speakers are Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar and US Attorney General John Ashcroft.
The two-day conference aims to "identify more effective ways and means to enhance counter-terrorism coordination among countries in the region," the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement.
The Bali bombing is believed to be the worst terrorist attack after the suicide attacks on US cities on Sept. 11, 2001.
A joint Australia-Indonesia investigation has led to the arrestof more than 30 men implicated with the Bali bombing, in which Australia lost 89 citizens.
